Runtime Video Player for IBM 386/486 PC compatibles. Xing grants you the right to reproduce and distribute the Xingit! This README file introduces Xing Technology and its products and gives instructions for: - installing the Xingit! Runtime Video Player; - starting the Xingit! Runtime Video Player; - boosting video playback performance. ################################################################################ INTRODUCING XING TECHNOLOGY Xing Technology Corporation, is an active participant in the international committee that established and defined the JPEG and MPEG standards. Xing develops, licenses, and applies data compression technology to multimedia communications solutions. The company's products enable OEM's, developers and end-users to integrate words, sound, still and moving pictures into cost-effective PC-based business, education and training tools. The PRODBRF.WRI file in this archive contains a brief introduction to the following products from Xing Technology: - Xingit! - real-time video capture board with encoding software, video and sound editors, and full-featured player; - XingCD - the first low-cost, full-screen MPEG compression software for desktop PCs; - Picture Prowler - a fast JPEG imagebase manager for Windows; - VTCompress - DOS and Windows application and libraries for coding/decoding and viewing JPEGs; - XingSound - real-time MPEG audio recorder, software encoder, and audio file player for Windows. Contact Xing or your Xing reseller for more information about these products. ################################################################################ INSTALLING THE XINGIT! RUNTIME VIDEO PLAYER The MPEGVU.EXE file is a self extracting ZIP file that contains the Xingit! Runtime Video Player. To install the player: 1 Create a new directory on your hard drive and copy into it the MPEGVU.EXE file. 2 Run the MPEGVU.EXE program from a DOS command line or from within Windows: - to run it from a DOS command line, change to the directory that contains the MPEGVU.EXE program and type "MPEGVU"; - to run it from within Windows, choose "Run" from the Program Manager's "File" menu; the "Run" dialog appears; enter in the "Command Line" field the full pathname of the MPEGVU.EXE program and click the "OK" button. PRODBRF.WRI A description of products from Xing Technology OEMSETUP.INF required for installation of MCI and AVI drivers XMCIAVI.EXE Windows program that silently installs Xingit!'s MCI and AVI drivers. MCIDOCS.WRI A description of supported MCI commands for MCIMPEG.DRV 3 Add the pathname of the installation directory to your environment's PATH variable. ################################################################################ STARTING THE XINGIT! RUNTIME VIDEO PLAYER The Xingit! Runtime Video Player includes a Windows MPEG Player (DMFW.EXE), a DOS MPEG Player (MPEG.EXE), and MCI and AVI drivers for video playback from compatible Windows applications. NOTE: This version of the Xingit! Runtime Video Player can not play MPEG files containing interframes ("B" and "P" frames) or interleaved MPEG audio data. I-frame only, video-only MPEG files are available on Xing's BBS. Version 1.2 of Xingit! will support MPEG files containing interframes and interleaved MPEG audio. As with any Windows application, you can start the DMFW.EXE program in a number of ways, e.g, from the File Manager or with the "Run" command in the Program Manager's "File" menu. It is easiest to create a new Program Manager item for the DMFW.EXE program: 1 Start Windows and open the Program Manager window; 2 Choose "New" from the Program Manager's "File" menu; the "New Program Object" window appears; 3 Select the "Program Item" radio button and click the "OK" button; the "Program Item Properties" window appears; 4 Enter "Xingit! Player" in the "Description" field, enter the full pathname of the DMFW.EXE program in the "Command Line" field, and enter the pathname of the directory that contains the DMFW.EXE program in the "Working Directory" field, and click the OK button; A new program item "Xingit! Player" appears. 5 Double-click the "Xingit Player" icon to start the program. The XingIt! player appears. You can now use the Xingit! Player as described in the programs' on-line help. To run the DOS version of the player (MPEG.EXE), change to the directory that contains the MPEG.EXE program and issue the following command: > MPEG MPEGFILENAME.MPG Where "MPEGFILENAME" is the name of an MPEG video file. To see a complete usage description, issue the following command: > MPEG To install the MCI and AVI drivers, run the XMCIAVI.EXE program that resides in the runtime player directory, and read the MCIDOC.WRI file for futher instructions. ################################################################################ BOOSTING VIDEO PLAYBACK PERFORMANCE The Xingit! Runtime Video Player uses a Windows Bitmap driver to communicate with your PC's video hardware and quickly playback video data on your computer's monitor. This Device Independent Bitmap (DIB) driver is active by default, so the Player works with any Windows-compatible video hardware. To achieve even faster playback of video sequences you can disable the DIB driver and use one of Xingit's direct drivers. These high-speed drivers communicate directly with many popular video boards. To disable the Xingit! Player's DIB driver and select a direct driver: 1 Make sure "Use DIB" item is unchecked in the Player's "View" menu. 2 Choose an appropriate entry from the "Video Driver" item in the Player's "View" menu. If the player recognizes your PC's video driver, it displays your driver's name at the bottom of the "Video Driver" menu with the label "Detected." 3 Choose "Save Xingit! Preferences" from the "Preferences" menu. The following direct video drivers are currently provided with the Xingit! NOTE FOR USERS WITH COMPAQ Q-VISION VIDEO The Xing Video drivers embedded within MPEG320.DLL & MPEG160.DLL are compatible for operation with the Compaq Advanced VGA, with which QVision boards are backward compatible. But, you cannot use QVision Windows drivers with our video file. Rather you must ensure that the Advanced VGA driver is installed for the QVision adapter board. 1 The Windows video driver installed via the windows SETUP icon should first be changed to the CPQAVGA.DRV driver. If this cannot be done within the SETUP program of Windows, you must accomplish this by manually editing the SYSTEM.INI file: Look in SYSTEM.INI and locate the parameter display.drv=QVISION8.DRV and change it to display.drv=CPQAVGA.DRV Using the display driver disk supplied by COMPAQ, locate the file CPQAVGA.DRV and copy it to the \SYSTEM subdirectory of your \WINDOWS 2 Using the COMPAQ supplied utility program CPQSETUP.EXE it will be necessary to assure that the D/A converter (DAC) is selected to 8-bit operation. 3 Within the Xingit! Player program, use the menu to select the Xing Video driver for Compaq select: View - Video Driver - Compaq AVGA.
